This week I’m joining an amazing team from the Center for Sport, Peace & Society & the U.S. Department of State to tell stories about women who have empowered through sports who are using their athletic platform and leadership skills to positively impact their community. I wanted to share some photographs from our visit to Educate-Me Egypt, which was founded by Yasmin Helal, a former basketball star in Egypt. She participated in the Global Sports Mentoring Program by the Center for Sport, Peace & Society at the University of Tennessee and has since been doing truly remarkable things in her community. We spent time getting to know Yasmin’s story and to meet the team she’s built who are dedicated to bringing about change in the Egyptian education system. They are creating education opportunities with unique curriculum, dedicated to helping students reach self-actualization and to empower them to improve their lives. They currently have one center and have great dreams to expand and impact the education system in Egypt. I wanted to share some images of the context of where they are working, the vibrant and hopeful community center they created and some portraits of the children they are educating. There is so much more to share from this story and I can’t wait to do so later, but for now, here are some of my favorite images from our morning visit at the Educate-Me Community Center.
