In December, I traveled to tell stories through photography on behalf of the U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program, in partnership with the University of Tennessee Center for Sport, Peace & Society. During our afternoon with Dima at the Syrian Refugee Camp in Jordan, Mary Harvey & Lori Lindsey (both of U.S. Women’s Soccer fame) conducted soccer training camps for the young girls. Mary even worked her magic to bring about 200 soccer balls to give to the Syrian Refugee Camp (donated by US Soccer). They taught drills, encouraged the girls and finished each session with a couple of soccer matches. It’s truly beautiful how sports can bring life to people and can give them opportunities for strength, fun, laughter, competition, and play.
