On our way to the Greek Islands, we had a full day of fun in Rome. Thanks to American Airline’s new non-stop daily flights from Dallas to Rome, we arrived in Rome at 9:00 a.m. and set off explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world. This was a very special experience for me to see the beauty of Rome in summer. I have traveled to Italy three times, but all of my trips have been in the off-season. It was incredible to see all of the full trees, the beautiful florals growing naturally around the city landscape and to be a part of the crowds of people at the gelato stores. We dropped our luggage off at the airport baggage storage, took a shuttle directly to the Vatican and started our day with cappuccino’s outside of the walled city. We chose to tour the piazza and then climb the 551 stairs to the top of Saint Peter’s basilica. The heat in the tiny tunnel staircases was tough, but well-worth the view we experienced at the top. We descended the stairs in time to see and hear Pope Francis speak to the packed piazza. We spent the rest of our day strolling the streets of Rome all the way to the Colosseum. We dined, we drank, we soaked in all we could in one very full day. We took the train back to the airport to await our light night flight to Santorini. Here are some of my favorite travel and landscape photos of our day in Rome.
